Amsterdam was founded as a fishing village on the Amstel River around the 13th century. The name Amstelledamme first appears in a charter granted by Floris V, Count of Holland. During the 14th and especially the 15th century, Amsterdam grew rapidly, laying the foundations for its Golden Age. Today only a few medieval buildings survive, such as the Old and New Churches and the Houten Huis (Wooden House) in the Begijnhof. In the Middle Ages, houses were mostly built of wood, a vulnerable building material. The famous Houten Huis is no exception to this rule. As a result, most of them were destroyed. Still, a surprisingly large number of homes in Amsterdam have wooden frames to this day. In the 17th century Amsterdam was the world’s leading marketplace. It was during this period that Amsterdam’s distinctive cityscape took shape. Some of its most important historic buildings date from this time, e.g. the town hall on Dam Square (now the Royal Palace), the Westerkerk, the Zuiderkerk, and many canal houses, including De Dolfijn (Dolphin), De Gecroonde Raep, Trippenhuis, Van Raey-huizen …

Wandering through Amsterdam, you’ll come across countless museums, galleries dedicated to Rembrandt and Van Gogh, the Anne Frank House, beautiful Protestant churches and the “Red Light” district; you’ll enjoy the canals, and you’ll take your best photos from its bridges.

When you’re tired of sightseeing, pick out a pair of clogs for yourself. They’re something unique and special that you’ll wear for a long time, keeping alive the memories of a wonderful trip to Amsterdam.

Whatever you think of them, traditional Dutch wooden shoes, or clogs (klompen), are an important part of Dutch heritage and are still worn in rural parts of the country. The Dutch language has many idioms related to wooden shoes. They are still popular with farm workers because they’re great for walking on muddy ground and are easy to wipe clean. Dutch clogs are made from different kinds of wood – poplar and willow are favorites – and are often painted. Clogs are even certified by the European Union as safety shoes because they can withstand sharp and heavy objects and concentrated acids. Traditionally, they are handmade by trained craftsmen. As you can imagine, making an identical pair of wooden shoes is no easy task, but professionals can produce up to seven pairs a day! Because worn-out clogs were used as fuel for the fireplace, historians have found it difficult to pin down their exact origins. Still, they are estimated to have appeared some 850 years ago, and the oldest wooden shoe was found on the Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam. Around six million souvenirs are made in the Netherlands every year, so rest assured you’ll find the right pair to take home!
