Why do we recommend a trip to Milan in particular? Not just because of cheap flights, daily departures and plenty of hotels, but also because of the city’s hidden treasures.
This part of the Lombard plain, crossed by the great Po River, has been inhabited since Celtic times. During the Roman Empire, it was right here that the famous Edict of Milan was issued… In the early 12th century the famous Duchy of Milan was established here, and under the rule of the Sforza family the city flourished once again during the Renaissance. It was at this very time that the famous Renaissance painter, sculptor, adventurer and explorer Leonardo da Vinci worked here as court painter. This great artist was commissioned to paint the north wall of the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Beyond the grandeur of the scene it depicts, the moment at the Last Supper when Jesus announces that one of the apostles will betray him, the painting left its mark on art history because Leonardo experimented with paints and surfaces, trying out a new technique for applying paint to a wall… The painting is impressively large, about 40m², and because the technique Leonardo da Vinci used proved unstable, it began to deteriorate even before it was finished…
Given the magnificence of this masterpiece, we definitely recommend going to see it. To secure a ticket, you should book in advance, which you can do at www.vivaticket.it
