Alitalia – flight tickets

Alitalia flights from Montenegro are no longer available – the airline ceased operations in 2021. This page explains who replaced Alitalia and the easiest ways to fly from Montenegro to Rome, Milan and other Italian cities today.

What happened to Alitalia

For decades Alitalia was Italy’s flag carrier, with its main hub at Rome Fiumicino. After years of financial difficulties, it operated its final flights in October 2021. Its business was taken over by the new state-owned carrier ITA Airways, which started flying immediately after Alitalia closed and is now part of the Lufthansa Group.

ITA Airways has its main hub in Rome (FCO), with Milan Linate as another key airport. From Rome it flies to cities across Italy, Europe and North and South America.

Alitalia flights from Montenegro today: getting to Italy

Instead of Alitalia, you can now choose between direct flights and connections to Italy:

  • Podgorica – Rome – flights by Air Montenegro and Wizz Air.
  • Podgorica – Milan (Malpensa) – flights by Wizz Air.
  • Other Italian cities – with a connection in Rome, continuing on ITA Airways to Naples, Palermo, Catania, Bari, Venice, Turin and more, or via other European hubs.

Frequencies depend on the season; the current schedule and all combinations are shown in the avio.me search.

Connecting in Rome with ITA Airways

Fiumicino is ITA Airways’ main hub, with connections to New York, Boston, Buenos Aires, São Paulo and other long-haul destinations. If the whole journey is on one ticket, your bag is normally checked through to your final destination. When combining flights from different airlines on separate tickets, allow plenty of connection time.

Baggage on flights to Italy

Baggage rules depend on the airline and fare. With low-cost carriers, the basic fare usually includes only a small cabin bag, and a suitcase costs extra. The exact allowance for your flight is shown in the avio.me search before you book.
